Classic Church Design by saunteringstep Classic Church Design by saunteringstep
I modelled this church for my portfolio because I like doing this kind of thing very much. As I don't want to be hired for anything but modelling and texturing my models, I haven't painted a background, composited my model into a photo, or used any special effects, like, for example, smoke from the chimney. I would like to eventually model an entire city, but until that day comes, this church will have no background. It is based on classic church designs, hence the title, and it will appear in an upcoming IMAX movie, called "Honey, I Shrunk the Universe!". The movie will be geared towards school kids going on fieldtrips, so it will probably only show during the school year, which I believe is September-ish. I don't know how the IMAX chooses their movies, but I think different theatres trade their movies with each other, so keep an eye out. Someday it will come to an IMAX near you. Maybe. I think there is an older version of this movie that's already been playing, but our Planetarium made a new one, or redid it or something.

This was modelled in 3D Studio Max 9, and I used Photoshop for the texture editing.

Here's my "Alternate Renders" scrap for this: [link]

Thats a great design, some small bits are a tad bit fake-looking, but I bet when its put in an entire scene, complete with natural outdoor lighting, it'll all look very realistic

I'll probably just edit the geometry at some point. I don't use filters anyway.

Cool model man, some of the edges look way to razor sharp but I'd imagine the poly count is kept pretty low so this would work well for rendering and game modeling. Maybe some texture flaws thrown along the edges of the roof would draw attention away from it? Just a thought, great job!

Ah, yes, yes. I'll consider it good enough for my portfolio for now, but a good tip I didn't notice to watch for in the future. Yes, I keep things as low-poly as possible, but there's always something that's just TOO low-poly. Thanks!

Well, I do have one character up. I haven't gone too in-depth in the character modelling yet, but I'm currently working on another one for my portfolio. Thank you for the compliment :)

I can say this: I definately will not model them if you can't draw (or have someone else draw) the character in a convenient front and side pose. A good example is daVinci's Vitruvian Man. I don't know how much you know about the process of 3D art, but after modelling, the model needs to be textured and rigged. Once rigged it can be repositioned so it isn't in that "Vitruvian" pose. I don't like rigging, and if you don't have a 3D artist friend who can rig for you, I don't think you'll even like my model . Other than that, I'd be happy to take a look at your characters, and see if they're not too hard, and that they wouldn't take too long.
